High wind & snow showers – the show must go on!
It’s snowing here again today along with blue skies and high wind, so not unpleasant out, just difficult to work with light materials.
Rather than battle the elements, we decided to set up a planting station on the kitchen table.
All the materials are finally here, so I was really keen to get on with sowing seeds to start things as early as possible.
Typically I got everything except one thing – seeding trays.. doh! ?
We decided to make do with what we have left over from last year..of course we didn’t have enough.
We made an executive decision to make the best of what we had to hand.
I mixed up some potting mix – 50% Compost 25% Vermiculite 25% Perlite- my theory is that the P&V will give great drainage and water retention, while the compost will hold the nutrients.
As you can see from the photos we had some small pots etc, but they ran out quickly. I marked out some rows with bamboo skewers in two open trays.
I think the herb tray will be fine, but I’m probably going to regret planting veg in together at re-potting time. ?
A nice spread of varieties going in (in no particular order)
- Onion – Red Baron
- Leek – Oarsman
- Beetroot – Cardeal F1
- Tomato – Tumbling Tom
- Tomato – Yellow Perfection
- Parsley – traditional.
- Kale – Colourful and Curly mix
- Broccoli – Summer Purple
- Basil – Dark Opal
- Komodo Dragon (recovered seeds from a bought chili)
- Summer Fire
- NuMex Twilight
- Centennial
- NuMex Suave Red
- Anaheim
- Peter Pepper
For the time-being all out seeds and potato chits are in crammed into the south facing widows we have (2) .
We’re due -3C temperatures over the next couple of nights, but hopefully the end of frosty nights is near so outside planting can begin.
We shall see over the next couple of weeks how things develop.
Fingers crossed ?
