Carrot pots ready

Mar 19, 2018Growing in the garden, In the garden

Mess, what mess?

A garden with a mess

Another fine mess…

Turns out mixing up 90 litres of potting mix for carrots is hard work!

I decided to move out to the garden to mix up the pot fill for the carrots, good job too as it turned out to be a messy business.

Sieving compost

This is totally worth it, right?

Note to self – groundsheets are good!

I watched a few ‘how to’ carrot videos on you tube and saw that to avoid the carrot splitting and get the best crop you can sieve the compost.

It seems a lot of extra effort, but the potential crop should make up for it.

Our sieve has very fine holes so this was an extremely laborious exercise.

Growing your own food really make you think about what’s on the table at meal-times.

I’ve never really used vermiculite or perlite before, but I’ve seen some great evidence that they improve the growing conditions considerably.

I certainly hope so for all the effort.

6 pots full of compost

ready for planting

I would have like to have sown the carrots this evening, but we’re due a frost and -4C temps tonight after such a nice clear day.

The rest of the week has a warmer forecast, so hopefully I will plant the seeds tomorrow.
