Things are growing.. fast!

Finally some sunshine!

You can almost watch the garden grow!

I’m so pleased we have finally got some good weather – with such a late start to the season everything was way over crowded in the house by the time we were able to plant out.

It’s been a crazy rush to get things acclimatised and outside.

Everything becomes urgent all at the same time, and the Ayrshire weather has a habit of changing in an instant.

A good weather triage was required to prioritise the various tasks, and eventually I managed to catch up enough to sit down and post an update here on the interwebs – it’s been ages!

Not everything made it 🙁 unfortunately I lost all the broccoli, purple basil and kale; Nevermind – all in the name of learning!

Hopefully, these are are the climbers

Another greenhorn mistake, the sun bleached off many of the name tags, which is mostly ok, except for the leaks and onions, which I now can’t tell apart.. i also couldn’t read which tomatoes were my hanging variety, so that could get interesting shortly!

My entire pepper crop also failed – I think due to old seed stock – but then, weeks later miraculously three have sprouted, so it will be interesting to find out out what blooms.

Topping up the potato pots after fist sprout.

Thankfully, plenty of potato, tomato, carrot, strawberries, onions/leaks 😉 lettuce, parsley and oregano and a few beetroot are looking strong and healthy now they are in their forever homes.

Micro Irrigation

One of the biggest problems I have found growing crops in containers is that despite using a high water retention medium, they will dry out completely on a full sun day.

Multi-pot carrot irrigation

I decided to try out a micro irrigation system.. I was surprised by how cheap the bits and pieces were, and I had to buy a few different types when I eventually worked out what I needed.  The results look promising, although its hard to get an even flow down the line – it’s about 15m long.

We shall see how long they last in use 🙂
