Spring sprunged!

Germination action

First sprouts, and carrot pots

It’s been just over 3 weeks since we planted our seeds indoors to start germination, we have had some successes and some failures.

In typical Scottish style we’ve had a full range of weather over the last few weeks from snow to sunshine, and back again with everything in between.

We had a great start to the germination process, almost everything popped immediately which was fantastic.

With the exception of the chillies (too old seed stock) and the carrots (so far anyway..) we had an almost 100% germination.

Things looking leggy

It was then that the weather changed, and snow came in along with freezing temperatures.

Our only large south facing window became over crowded and with the added problem of lower light levels – due to the weather –  many of our seeds became pretty leggy.

Reflector in place

I went to the interwebs, and people having the same problems as us have had a lot of benefit from making reflectors from foil for enhancing poor light.

I had a look around the house for something suitable, and Dawn’s photographic reflectors looked like they would do the trick nicely.

So far the results look promising.

Dawn has thinned out a many of the seedlings already, and I think another session will be needed soon.

Hopefully the weather will be a little more consistent and we can start to pot on, and get things outside.

Tatties chitting nicely

Our potatoes have recovered well, and are now almost ready to

plant out – both varieties seems to be viable.

Our carrots aren’t showing any sign of life yet; I suspect I may have put them out a little early, but I’m going to wait one more week before re-sowing.

A good growing start

Hopefully in the next week I will also manage to get some salad leaf plants started, some new peppers/chillies and some nice strawberries.

Really looking forward to seeing some results, if it goes well this year, we’ll definitely commit more of the garden to food next year.
