Boards collapsed!
Much to our horror, rotten decking boards just outside the back door collapsed underfoot over the winter.
Luckily no-one was hurt and we just moved a plant over the hole until the worst of the winter passed, but deck surgery was required.
Not really the way I wanted to start the 2018 decking season, but needs must.
I cut out the rotted board, checked the frame structure and slotted some fresh boards in place.
Job Done.. except, as you may have noticed I cut the post board in the wrong corner.
Plus I wasted the opportunity to treat the new boards and old post which was slightly damaged too..
Never-mind! will maybe take the rail off to treat the boards when I’m ready to treat the deck.
As an aside, I actually learned that all our decking boards are on upside down (apart from that one I just put in 😉 ) as the grooves are actually meant to channel air on the underside.
The grooves reduce traction as less contact area is gripping your foot.
It’s a UK thing apparently. We like our fancy ridges…
Maybe one day I will turn all the boards, would certainly make staining a lot easier – but not this year I think.
